Every now and then, we all feel the need to take pause, and reset our minds and bodies. A yoga class at SASS is perfect for that but first thing’s first; just what makes yoga so worthwhile?
What is yoga?
Yoga isn’t just a class we offer here at SASS. It’s an ancient practice that can be performed by anyone, including those recovering from injury.
Its roots can be traced to Northern India and it’s considered a mental, physical, and spiritual practice. The word “yoga” itself stems from Sanskrit and means “to unite.”
There are many different types of yoga. To name a few, there’s: Ashtanga (mindful movement with an emphasis on meditation), Vinyasa flow (A dynamic, flow-based practice akin to an aerobic workout), Yin yoga (A slow practice where poses are held for a longer duration of time), and Hatha (Another slow-flow style of yoga but good for building strength as well as flexibility).
In yoga, the focus on your breathing is of utmost importance. Yogic breathing – the manipulation of breath movement – supports the functioning of a healthy immune system.
What is a yoga class like at SASS?
Yoga is performed on mats, which will already be laid out prior to the start of the class.
At SASS, our resident yoga instructor, Clare Passmore, typically asks at the beginning of each class whether the group is in the mood for something more action-based or restorative. She will then lead a set of exercises that caters to what the class needs.
Prior to the beginning of class, you will also have the opportunity to share whether you are recovering from any injuries, so that Clare can give special adjustments to the exercises for you.
