If you’re looking to tone and sculpt, a barre class is the way to go! For those unfamiliar with barre, fear not, for here is the SASS guide to what being a barre babe entails…

What is a barre class like?

Here at SASS, we offer pilates x barre classes. Each class is 45 minutes long and is set to a fun, upbeat soundtrack. You’ll be doing a mix of exercises inspired by both pilates and ballet movements, each focussed on the smaller muscle groups throughout your body.

Movements are low-impact and high-rep, meaning you’ll be performing the same movements many times over, despite them seeming perfectly easy and lightweight at first. Again, as each exercise targets your smaller muscle groups, these isolated movements will have you feeling the burn in no time at all and while you may feel humbled, you’ll certainly be having a blast – especially with the boost in endorphins rushing through your body!

What equipment is used in a barre class?

Each pilates x barre class at SASS utilises a barre; this is the piece de resistance of each class. It is where numerous standing, squatting, and balancing movements are performed. At times you’ll be gripping it tightly and at others, it’ll simply be an aid to a body weight exercise; your fingers lightly touching the barre to ensure you don’t fall over.

Typically, other equipment will include a mat, lightweight dumbbells (usually 1 or 2 kg), resistance bands, and a pilates ball but it will depend on the exercises your instructor will have in mind for the day.

What are the benefits of doing barre?

If you get to SASS and take our pilates x barre classes regularly, you’ll feel stronger and leaner in no time at all. Since this is a whole body workout, you’ll not only feel energised after class but increase strength and flexibility all over, enhancing your overall body confidence.
