Over the decades, swathes of women have exited the pilates studio not only fitter, stronger, and sculpted but also happier and empowered. The Pilates Princess is more than someone who shows up to class in cute workout wear; it’s a lifestyle, a state of mind, a philosophy, if you will!
For those unfamiliar with pilates, there’s both mat and reformer pilates. Mat pilates is done on a mat (duh) while reformer pilates takes place on a reformer machine. Both forms of pilates have their merits and will work the smaller muscle groups in your body that wouldn’t normally be exercised from a session at the gym.
At SASS, we offer mat pilates with a twist of barre. Our Pilates x Barre class is taught in our new studio space, fully equipped with mats, booty bands, pilates balls, dumbbells, and everything else needed for a satisfying sweat sesh, all set to a soundtrack of high vibe beats curated by the in-house team.
Common pilates moves you’ll master from attending class regularly include but aren’t limited to: the pelvic curl, chest lifts (with and without rotation!), single leg stretches, and, of course, the “Pilates Hundred”.
While the movements are easy enough to get the hang of, pilates is low weights and high repetitions- meaning aside from bodyweight exercises, any weights used will only range from 1 – 5 kg at most, depending on your strength level. Bearing in mind that reps will be much higher than what you’d do per set in any gym workout, you’ll be puffing and panting in no time!
Having said that, in pilates, having the right breathing technique is paramount, and our instructors, Vicky Bryant and Molly Darwood, will regularly work the room to check you’re inhale and exhales occur at the optimal time.
To book a class, you can download the SASS app from both iOS app store and the Google Play Store. We look forward to seeing you, pilates princess!
